Yeshivat Torah Chaim’s Historic Launch
This past Monday night, January 20, the doors of Briarwood Jewish Center opened to a large crowd seeking shelter from the icy weather outside. The event marked a pivotal moment for the Bukharian metropolis of New York as Yeshivat Torah Chaim steps forward to fulfill a long-awaited need within its heart, the Queens community.
Among the more than 60 attendees were rabbanim and members of Brooklyn's Bukharian community, mechanchim and leaders from Queens, educational activists from Far Rockaway and Great Neck, and, most notably, prominent Torah builders from the Tri-State area.
The evening began with an address from Rav Shalom Khaimov shlit”a, who emphasized that the yeshivah’s core mission is to inspire a deep connection to Torah and facilitate growth in learning, halachah, character development, with a focus on a comprehensive general studies program.
Rav Shimon Daks, the esteemed General Studies principal currently serving in a principal position at Yeshiva Darchei Torah, further elaborated on this vision. Drawing on his 25 years of experience in chinuch, he outlined a balanced approach that integrates high-level academic instruction with enriching extracurricular activities, such as AP courses, gym, and swimming.
Next, Rav Doniel Lander shlit"a of Mesivta Yesodei Yeshurun and Yeshiva Ohr HaChaim took the stage. With passion and conviction, he highlighted the significance of the new mesivta for the community, emphasizing the unique opportunity it offers for Torah growth. He lauded Rav Khaimov for his fine middos and scholarship, confident that he would lead the community toward its fullest potential in Torah learning.
Following him, Rabbi Yosef Bitton shlit"a, Rosh Mosdos Zichron Binyomin of Lakewood, NJ, made a powerful statement. As a trailblazer in Sephardic Torah Jewry, he stressed that the responsibility for supporting the yeshivah should fall to the community itself, not external sources like "Broadway," "Forty-Seventh Street," or "Trump." He pledged his personal commitment to covering a significant portion of the yeshivah’s budget over the next three years, allowing Rav Khaimov to focus on the yeshivah’s mission.
The evening concluded with remarks from Rav Yaakov Bender, shlit"a, Rosh Yeshivah, Yeshiva Darchei Torah, who commended the community for its unwavering dedication to its children’s education. In today’s world, where technology presents new challenges, he emphasized the importance of mechanchim who truly understand and connect with their students. Only through this deep connection can they guide them with warmth toward greatness.
