In the inaugural episode of Chazaq Torah Talks, host Rabbi Yaniv Meirov welcomed esteemed guest Rabbi Shalom Arush for a profound discussion on emunah (faith) and hitbodedut (personal prayer). Rabbi Arush, founder of the Chut Shel Chessed Institutions in Yerushalayim, is renowned for his teachings on spiritual growth and has authored several influential works, including The Garden of Emuna. His institutions encompass a yeshivah, kollel, and outreach programs aimed at spreading the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and fostering personal spiritual development.

The episode, originally recorded on February 16, 2021 with English translation by Rav Dayan Elgrod, kicked off with Rabbi Meirov warmly welcoming Rabbi Arush and immediately diving into a pressing question: "Over the last year during this crazy pandemic, many have struggled with emunah; how do we enhance our emunah?" Rabbi Arush didn’t hesitate, responding with his characteristic positivity: "We are not in the hands of the virus. We are in the hands of Hashem." He explained that recognizing everything, including the pandemic, as part of Hashem’s plan brings joy and tranquility even amid hardship.

Rabbi Arush went on to share how the pandemic, despite its global challenges, opened unexpected doors for him. Unable to travel, he began offering virtual classes in English, Spanish, French, German, and Hebrew from his studio, reaching thousands more than ever before. "Now, thousands more can hear my classes," he said with gratitude, illustrating how Hashem orchestrates opportunities even in tough times.

The conversation then shifted to vaccines, a topic on many minds. Rabbi Meirov asked how to reconcile faith with medical advancements. Rabbi Arush made it clear: "Even the vaccine is in the hands of Hashem." He explained that placing faith solely in medical solutions without recognizing Hashem’s involvement can be misguided. Instead, one should pray and acknowledge that even medical breakthroughs are under Divine guidance.

As the discussion progressed, Rabbi Arush introduced hitbodedut, the practice of personal, direct communication with Hashem. He described it as spontaneous, heartfelt dialogue, a return to how Jews prayed before the establishment of formal liturgies. "Speak to Hashem from the heart," the rav urged, emphasizing that setting aside just a few minutes for personal prayer strengthens emunah profoundly.

In a poignant moment, Rabbi Meirov asked how one can maintain a positive attitude through life’s challenges. Rabbi Arush responded with a moving story: Just before the event, he had comforted families who had tragically lost young children. He emphasized that faith remains steadfast despite pain: "Faith doesn’t change. Even when we don’t understand, we must trust that Hashem’s plan is ultimately good." His words moved the audience, illustrating the profound peace that comes from unwavering faith.

As the episode wrapped up, Rabbi Arush left listeners with a simple yet profound message: "Everyone needs to know Hashem loves you with infinite love. The main grief that Hashem has is that you don't know how much Hashem loves you." His heartfelt words served as a powerful reminder of Divine love and the strength found in faith.
