This week the YCQ 6th grade had its annual science fair. Some kids worked alone and some worked in groups. Each group or individual chose their own unique topic to present to the judges. At the fair, the students showed their findings to the younger grades, teachers and their families.
Earlier this year the sixth graders chose their topics and presented them to the science teacher, Mr. Rayburn, for approval. Once the teacher approved the project, the groups researched their projects and gathered their materials. They came up with their hypothesis and started experimenting to collect data. When their research was complete, they made presentation boards that they displayed for students, teachers, school administrators and student’s families to view.
At the conclusion of the science fair, every student received his or her own certificate for their hard work. The projects ranged from lighting potato chips on fire to building computers from scratch. Honorable Mentions were awarded to top projects. Eitan Goldberg for Data Pictures and Blair Greenfield for Can You Hear Me Now? won the third place trophy; Noah Segelnick for Cell Phone Radiation and Elisheva Mohktar won second for Non Toxic Tide Pods; and Siggy Orenbuch and Ezra Schick won first place for their project Cut It Out, a study on what best cleans cuts. First, second and third place winners will go on to the inter-Yeshiva Science competition, which will take place in May.
