This past Sunday evening, July 5, family members, friends, and community residents filled the streets of Rego Park for the historic hachnasat sefer Torah of the Matatov family, celebrating with spirited song, dancing, and an outpouring of kavod haTorah.
The crowd gathered at the Matatov residence on 65th Road, where a lively Torah truck led the procession along 99th Street to Ohel Joseph & Brukho Toxsur. Children proudly waved flags while people of all ages joined together in vibrant rikudim, reflecting the community’s shared love for Torah.
One of the evening’s highlights came as Avraham Matatov, an eighth-grade student at Yeshiva Tiferes Moshe, led the assembled crowd in uplifting song. Rabbi Avner Yunaev, Rav of the shul, was at the center of the energy, encouraging the crowd as voices rose together in celebration.
Upon arriving at the shul, the current sifrei Torah met the new addition. The dancing and festive melodies continued as 99th Street was temporarily closed to traffic, allowing the excitement to proceed safely before the Torah was brought into its new home.
Queens Shmira provided public safety throughout the procession, coordinating temporary road closures and helping ensure the celebration ran smoothly from beginning to end.
Following the procession, the congregation davened Minchah, after which Meir Simcha Yunaev made a meaningful siyum on Masechet Horayot, adding another dimension of holiness to the evening.
A festive seudat mitzvah followed in the shul’s Millennium Hall, where the gathering continued the celebration.
May the Matatov family be zocheh to abundant brachah, hatzlachah, and nachat, and may this beautiful occasion bring lasting zechuyot to their loved ones and to all of klal Yisrael.
