For the first time, a New York City public school partnered with the broader Chabad community to provide students with a hands-on Jewish cultural experience in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

The trip was organized for students of JHS 157 Halsey in Forest Hills and offered a full day of immersive learning and exploration. Students visited the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s synagogue at 770 Eastern Parkway, toured the renowned Chabad Library, and watched the vibrant Mitzvah Tank Parade. The day also included Judaica shopping, a live demonstration with a sofer (Jewish scribe), a pizza lunch, a hands-on matzah bakery experience, and a visit to a local leather factory.

More than just a trip, the program was designed to give Jewish students in public schools an opportunity to connect with their heritage in a meaningful and engaging way.

The initiative was led by Rabbi Yaakov Horvitz of Chabad Youth Queens and is part of his broader work running Jewish clubs in multiple local schools, including JHS 157, Russell Sage JHS 190, and Forest Hills High School.

The trip was held in honor of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s birthday, adding an extra layer of significance to an already impactful day.
