As the Jewish New Year 5786 approached, the Beth Gavriel Center filled with warmth, laughter, and the unmistakable spirit of Rosh Hashanah. There was a sense of togetherness in the air — the kind that comes when families and friends prepare for the holiest days of the year and hope to be inscribed in the Book of Life.

To welcome the season, the women of our community gathered for a cherished tradition: the Challah Party. It’s more than an evening of baking — it’s a celebration of connection. From little girls kneading dough for the very first time, to mothers passing on family recipes, to grandmothers whose hands have shaped thousands of loaves, everyone brings something beautiful to the table. The mitzvah of challah ties them all together, reminding us that holiness can be found in the simplest of ingredients when they’re mixed with love and intention.

On September 16, the synagogue’s hall was transformed into a festive workshop. Tables were set with bowls of dough, and before long, the sound of rolling, braiding, and laughter filled the room. Soon the hall carried that sweet, unmistakable aroma of challah — the smell that feels like home, Shabbat, and Yom Tov all rolled into one.

The evening began with blessings from Rabbi Emanuel Shimonov, who wished everyone a year of happiness, prosperity, and peace for Israel. Rebbetzin Esther uplifted the women with Torah thoughts connected to the mitzvah of challah, while Rebbetzin Leah Mulozhanova spoke warmly in English, sharing the deeper spiritual meaning behind this special practice.

After the kneading, it was time to recharge. Neatly packed dinners were enjoyed, music invited women to the dance floor, and a spirited raffle added excitement. The evening closed with the traditional lighting of candles, casting a soft, holy glow that reminded everyone of the light we carry into the new year.

What made the night unforgettable was the women themselves. With their devotion to home, family, and tradition, they turned a simple gathering into a true celebration of Jewish life. Special thanks goes to Rebbetzin Esther, whose dedication and leadership once again brought the community together and made the event so uplifting.

The Challah Party wasn’t just about baking bread — it was about kneading hearts together, weaving tradition with joy, and starting the new year in the warmest way possible.
