His funeral was one the largest in Jewish history with a reported one million mourners pouring into the streets of Jerusalem.

Seven years later, Chacham Ovadia Yosef’s presence is still sorely missed. “Although we have many great sages and leaders, it still doesn’t come close to what Maran, our master, Rav Ovadia Yosef presented.” That was a recurring statement made by Rabbis this past week in the virtual Chazaq Yahrtzeit presentation broadcasted on TorahAnytime.

The speakers of the event included Maran’s sons, Rav Yitzchak Yosef, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, and Rav David Yosef, head of the prominent Yechave Da’at Rabbinical Yeshiva.

The event also included special words of inspiration by prominent Torah scholars such as Rav Yitzchak Yisraeli, the Chief Rabbi of the Bukharian community of the USA and Canada, who was a student of Maran. Rav Asher Weiss, a renowned Rabbinic Judge from Jerusalem also shared his experiences with Maran.

Other speakers included Rabbi Ilan Meirov (Director of Chazaq), Rabbi Yaakov Mizrachi (Rabbi of Har Halebanon), Rabbi Yaakov Rachimi (Head of Tiferet Mishna Berura), Rabbi Tzvi Chakak (Maran’s personal assistant) and Rabbi David Shelby (who was close to Maran).

The event attracted several thousand viewers who were given a glimpse of who Maran was. They learned not only about his dedication to learning and spreading Torah but to his sensitivity and care for anyone that came his way. Maran gave his time and heart for all in need despite having a schedule that was extremely busy.

“We must learn from him to be compassionate to all.  To help those who need financial help, to inspire those who need to learn Torah. To give time for others and be sensitive,” stated Rav David Yosef.
