On Tuesday morning, May 26, 2020 David Mordechaev, the Rego Park liaison for the Alliance of Bukharian Americans joined COVID-19 Relief Subcommittee member Shabsie Saphirstein to deliver a special breakfast to frontline healthcare heroes at New York-Presbyterian Queens. They were joined by Jacqueline Cahill, the director of volunteer services for NYPQ, who showed much appreciation to ABAHC for thinking of the hospital staff. Bagel Boss Queens partnered with ABAHC to deliver boxes of prepared breakfast meals to the healthcare workers specifically working on COVID-19 hospital floors.

In recent weeks, Alliance of Bukharian Americans Health Committee ran a successful grassroots fundraiser, Food For Our Heroes, that raised nearly $2000. The committee desired to express thanks to the healthcare workers that continue to care for our community members – our leaders, neighbors, friends, family members, and loved ones stricken with the dreaded coronavirus. It is the efforts and sacrifices of each healthcare worker that gives survivors and the rest of the community hope for the future. There is simply no excuse for a frontline hero to go hungry during their shift.

Food For Our Heroes launched an appreciation program where local eateries offer a 10% discount to police, fire and healthcare workers. The program definition was expanded to include janitors, administrators, clerks, officers, doctors and others associated within these industries. The initiative is seeking additional eateries to sign up for this groundbreaking program. To date, Laffa Bar & Grill in Hewlett, Sushi Fussion and Jerusalem Bagels in Forest Hills, Sushi Kingdom & Asian Fusion, Bagel Boss, The New Pizza Professor and Carlos and Gabby’s in Kew Gardens Hills and The Hot Spot BBQ & Grill in Fresh Meadows have signed up to show gratitude.
