On Wednesday September 18th, a very special gathering by the Chief Bukharian Rabbinate and the Agudas Yisroel of America was held at Congregation Od Yosef Chai. Over forty rabbanim came to hear presentations about the 13th Global Siyum Hashas of Daf Yomi to take place January 1, 2020 /4 Teves 5780 at MetLife Stadium.

The Siyum Hashas is the celebration of the completion of the Daf Yomi (daily Talmud folio) program, a seven-and-a-half-year cycle of learning the Oral Torah and its commentaries, in which each of the 2,711 pages of the Babylonian Talmud are covered in sequence. The first Daf Yomi cycle began on the first day of Rosh Hashanah 5684 (11 September 1923); the twelfth cycle concluded on 2 August 2012 with over 100,000 in attendance at the celebration. The Siyum HaShas marks both the end of the previous cycle and the beginning of the next, and is characterized by inspiring speeches and rousing singing and dancing.

The program was chaired by Rabbi Ilan Meirov, Director of the Chazaq organization which inspires hundreds of public school students throughout the immigrant community. He welcomed the local Rabbanim and the special delegation that had come from the Siyum Hashas Committee of Agudas Yisroel of America. Rav Ilan Meirov also spoke about the great opportunity of having a Chief Rav who unifies the Bukharian community.

The gathering was then addressed by Harav Aharon Walkin, Rosh Yeshiva of the Chazaq Beis Medrash, Beth Noson Meir. He spoke passionately about the special relationship all successful teachers of the Torah have with their students, and their uncompromising dedication and love for the community.

Rabbi Yitzchak Yisraeli, Chief Rabbi of the Bukharian Communities in the USA and Canada, spoke next. He highlighted the great importance of learning Torah with all of the foundations intact. One must learn Mishna and Gemarah and Halacha in unity, and only then will he have a clear understanding.

Harav Noach Isaac Oelbaum, Rav, Khal Nachlas Yitzchok spoke next about the importance of limud haTorah and how it has transformative powers, and how it can change the world.

They also discussed their tremendous relationship between the Agudah and the community and how that translated into extraordinary benefits for klal Yisroel.

A special video was then shown highlighting the last Siyum Hashas and the different Chavrei and Masmidei Hashas Siyum programs. Rabbi Becker and Rabbi Perl of Agudas Yisroel of America then spoke of their experiences working on the Siyum and invited all the Rabbanim, their shuls, and the community as a large to participate.

We were moved by the warm and enthusiastic reception that the Rabbanim gave us. Said Rabbi Becker, “It is incredible to see the inspirational koach of the Siyum, and its ability to galvanize Klal Yisroel with a feeling of achdus and enthusiasm. We very much look forward to working with the Bukharian communities…both in the months leading up to the Siyum and helping the community grow exponentially. We look forward to completing the Shas and celebrating the 14th Siyum.”

The event concluded on a good note, with a palpable air of excitement for events yet to come. The wonderful meeting was organized by Rabbi Yaniv Meirov, CEO, Chazaq.
