With approximately two weeks to go before the school year begins, the CHAZAQ organization held a special yeshiva open house event at Beth Gavriel in Forest Hills to encourage public school parents consider enrolling their children to yeshivas. “We have about 15 Yeshivas here showcasing their educational standards” said Chazaq operations manager Yaniv Meirov. “This is a last-minute push that has proven to Baruch HaShem provide great results in the past”.
In fact, with Chazaq’s latest campaign of enrolling Jewish public school students to Yeshiva, they have successfully transferred an astounding 102 students to yeshiva in the last 2 and a half months and a total of over 470 in the last two years. “The numbers are truly remarkable and we are seeing hashgacha pratis on a daily basis. But we must not be satisfied. We have a lot more work to do and we will continue going full force”.
A quarter century ago, the collapse of the Soviet Union brought tens of thousands of Bukharian Jews to Queens. Yeshiva Primary and Ezra Academy in Queens, and Be’er Hagolah in Brooklyn, were among the early schools that provided a yeshivah education to children of immigrants. Financial difficulties and a Soviet upbringing that shunned religion kept many families away from yeshivos and a generation of Bukharian Jews was educated at schools that had a sizable Jewish student body but a complete absence of Jewish values and practices.
For most Jewish parents of public school students a yeshiva that is competitive with public schools academically is a must. Though the CHAZAQ staff are quick to point out that although academics is of great importance nevertheless planting our children with strong Jewish values is priceless and only a yeshiva education can provide that along with a very respectful academic program. “A yeshiva education truly provides the total package” says Meirov.
All in all, the effort put into this open house event is worthy of a political campaign, as Chazaq staff members and volunteers looked up names, called relatives and friends, anyone they knew who was Jewish and in public school. The result was a great success as scores of parents attended and are now strongly considering a yeshiva education for their children.
“The most we can do is give a strong effort” says Meirov. “Our Afterschool programs for public school children of all ages is changing the lives of hundreds of boys and girls every month. The hundreds of students we have thus far transferred to Yeshiva is further solidifying the future of these beautiful souls. Bezrat hashem we look to double and triple our results in the years to come”.
