“Amidst a rising tide of antisemitism in our country, I’m praying for safety and prosperity for our Jewish community,” the New York City mayor told JNS.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with Jewish community leaders in the heavily Orthodox Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y., on Monday to discuss security concerns ahead of the High Holidays.
Adams told JNS that he stands with the Jewish community “on the issues that matter most to them, including public safety, education and combating antisemitism.”
“It’s always meaningful to visit communities like Borough Park to hear out their concerns and express an early Shanah Tovah to our Jewish New Yorkers,” Adams said. “Ahead of the Jewish New Year, and amidst a rising tide of antisemitism in our country, I’m praying for safety and prosperity for our Jewish community.”
Adams toured Jewish businesses in the neighborhood, including Eichler’s Judaica, Weiss Kosher Bakery and Oh! Nuts.
The mayor, who is running for reelection as an independent after declining to seek the Democratic nomination in the June primary, currently leads among Jewish voters in New York City, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll of likely voters.
According to the same poll, Adams would come in last in a four-way race between Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, former governor and fellow independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, and the Democratic frontrunner, state representative Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani’s statements on Israel, including that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes, his claim that Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza and his refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada,” have left him with a 75% disapproval rating among Jewish voters, even as he maintains a 22-point lead in the race overall.
A spokesman for Adams denied on Sunday that the mayor was considering dropping out of the race to consolidate the anti-Mamdani vote.
“Any rumor or tweet suggesting Mayor Adams is stepping down this week is complete baloney,” Adams’ spokesperson Todd Shapiro told News 12. “Eric Adams is in this race to win it, and no amount of fake chatter or political spin will change that.”
