"The Jews carried the Torah through the centuries as their portable homeland." — Heinrich Heine
On March 19, Beth Gavriel became the focal point of a powerful moment in Sephardic Jewish history, as the community gathered for an unforgettable event. While the shul is familiar to its regular members, the evening saw an influx of new faces, all there to support Yosef Ibragimov, a well-respected member of the Russian Jewish community who made the profound decision to donate a new sefer Torah to the santuary—a gift from him and his family that would strengthen the community’s connection to its heritage for generations to come.
Rabbi Emanuel Shimonov, lead rabbi at Beth Gavriel, explained, “The sefer Torah represents the most sacred connection between the Jewish people and our Creator. The custom of bringing a new sefer Torah into the synagogue, known as hachnasat sefer Torah, is a time-honored practice that unites the community and deepens its spiritual bond.”
The Ibragimov event encapsulated the enduring meaning of Jewish tradition, as reflected in the timeless words of Heinrich Heine: “The Jews carried the Torah through the centuries as their portable homeland.” Heine, a German-Jewish poet, struggled with his identity in the face of antisemitism during the 19th century. Though he distanced himself from Judaism, Heine’s eventual return to his roots before his death underscores the unbreakable connection between a Jew and their heritage.
Yosef Ibragimov’s decision to donate the sefer Torah exemplifies this enduring bond. Although he had built a successful life as a businessman in Moscow, Ibragimov felt a deep, spiritual pull that led him to Queens. His mission was clear: to present a new sefer Torah to Beth Gavriel and its esteemed community. For Ibragimov, this sacred scroll symbolized a lasting connection between the Almighty and the souls of his departed family members—his beloved grandfather and uncles. His gesture reflected both his unwavering connection to his Jewish roots and his sense of spiritual responsibility.
The Beth Gavriel community embraced Ibragimov’s gift with warmth and gratitude. Its noted leadership, including President Ilya Koptiev, Vice-President Simkha Alishev, and the rav, recognized the profound significance of this contribution. In honoring the memory of Ibragimov’s family, the Beth Gavriel community reinforced the sacred and foundational Jewish tradition of remembrance.
The evening unfolded with lively conversation and camaraderie, as guests came together in the spirit of community. The atmosphere was further enriched by a live musical program, making it an unforgettable experience.
The event took place in the magnificent new hall of Beth Gavriel, soon to open its doors to the wider Forest Hills community. This milestone marked a new chapter for the synagogue, brimming with excitement for what lies ahead. The donation of the sefer Torah was not just the arrival of a holy manuscript; it was a powerful reminder of the unbroken chain of Jewish tradition and the enduring connection between the Jewish people and our faith.
This occasion underscored the continued relevance of the sefer Torah and the strength of Jewish identity. It reinforced the unbreakable connection that binds our nation, serving as a poignant reminder that, like the Torah itself, Jewish identity endures through the ages as a living legacy.
