President Trump made it abundantly clear at the State of the Union speech that his party’s policies and the new progressive socialist agenda that is infecting the Democrat party from the left are diametrically opposed to each other declaring emphatically that “ America will never be a Socialist country”. President Trump stated, ‘America was founded on liberty and independence and not governmental coercion, domination and control. We are born free and we will stay free’” Upon hearing this, many of Democrats in the audience appeared stone faced and seemed to shift uncomfortably in their seats.

This declaration came from President Trump as the announced Democrat candidates for the 2020 presidential race are promoting a litany of socialist concepts including Medicare for all. free college tuition. forgiveness from accrued college loans, minimum wage increases and even guaranteed basic income. President Trump reiterated his point by citing the ongoing disaster occurring in Venezuela where socialist policies have wrought “abject poverty and despair” to the citizens of the country and pledged to prevent this type of disaster from happening to us by maintaining free market economics in the US.

Trump cited in his speech the economic decline and civil disorder in Venezuela as a cautionary tale after his administration imposed last week sweeping sanctions against the regime of Nicolas Maduro. The country’s government has limited its citizens of foreign currency, implemented substantial subsidies and price controls on food, medicine and other items (including toilet paper) and fell victim to sweeping corruption-before effectively collapsing last month.

The US recently officially recognized the legitimate government of Venezuela and the new interim president Juan Guido. Trump said, “We stand with the Venezuelan people in their noble quest for freedom and we condemn the brutality of the Maduro regime whose Socialist policies have turned that nation from being the wealthiest in South America into a state of abject poverty and despair”. The Venezuelan government isn’t just content to control the oil that had once made them rich; it wants to control all businesses. It controls the price of things and who gets it.

At the State of the Union speech, viewers at home saw the old curmudgeon Senator Bernie Sanders, an avowed Socialist and the modern day god father of the progressive movement; sit stone faced hearing the President’s remarks. Sander’s influence has produced a host of far-left young Democrats including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who also was shown sitting expressionless in her white outfit. Senator Chuck Schumer, to his credit, applauded President’s point of view.

Sanders later tweeted after the speech that, ”Trump said tonight we are born free and we will stay free; I say to Trump, people are not truly free when they can’t afford health care, prescription drugs or a place to live. People are not free when that cannot retire with dignity or feed their families.” Bernie Sanders, the big shot socialist, is actually a millionaire. He should give some tzedakah to help ameliorate the plight of some of those that he spoke about.

Part of Sanders’ minions is millennials. They are the ones supporting socialism. In my day, socialism used to be considered a bad thing (and it still is); but Millennials have no idea what Socialism actually is. To them it’s just a concept the promotes freebees. Of course, our millennials have never heard of the adage that “there is no such thing as a free lunch”.

As educated consumers, all of us must understand the true definition of socialism. It is an economic system which promotes government ownership. In this system, the government mandates production and dictates prices. Private ownership of property is unacceptable. Production is done for use whereas in capitalism it is generated for profit.

The big draw to socialism for the young people is its promotion of free access to education and health care. But in reality, things aren’t as utopian as it claims to be. The government owns the hospitals, health care facilities, medicines and medical services. People have to deal with a burgeoning bureaucracy which makes it difficult to get services quickly. Most have to wait months to have surgeries. They are deprived of immediate assistance which can be serious and life-threatening to the patient.

In socialism there is a progressive taxation. So, the higher the income, the higher the taxes that bleads the more successful to the point that they do not have enough to spend. Ocasio-Cortez, for example, espouses to tax the wealthy 70% of their income. With this concept, people will lack the motivation to work harder and dream of improving their lives. Why should they if the government is going to take it all?

This system eliminates monopolies in corporations. Critics of socialism argue that allowing the government to run people’s lives including where to live, how much to earn and what health care is allotted to them is unfair because the people have no say with less options available to them.

After studying all aspects of socialism, we must support President Trump and make sure that America will not be a socialist country. The United States of America is a blessed land where those who come to have a better life with hard work and motivation have the opportunity to benefit from the American dream. We cannot allow that to be messed up. That is part of what makes America great.
