Dear Alice,
Steak...hot dogs..more steak...barbeques...racks of ribs...beef has become a staple in the Jewish home, and for very good reason - deliciousness! What about on Nutrition by Tanya? What's your opinion on beef?
Dear Reader,
Eating beef on most diets gets a pretty bad rap! “High in fat! And not the good fats!” doctors warn. Of course, in diets such as the Keto diet, Beef is revered, because the fat helps along the ketosis process. But what about on Nutrition by Tanya? Our opinion on beef? We are exactly where we are with every other food on our plan - we are balanced, and consistent in our approach - everything in moderation unless it’s so dense in calories or so common a trigger, that it is best avoided.
Of course, not all beef products are created equal. Take a look at the following chart to see how vastly different cuts of meat stack up in terms of calories, saturated fats and overall health:
Beef Ribs 100g 238 cal
Spare Ribs 100g 238 cal
Beef Brisket 100g 242 cal
Ground Beef 100g 246 cal
Ground Round 100g 246 cal
Pork Country-Style Ribs 100g 247 cal
Roast Beef 100g 248 cal
Cubed steak 100g 199 cal
New York Strip Steak 100g 199 cal
T-Bone Steak 100g 202 cal
Chuck Steak 100g 277 cal
Standing Rib Roast 100g 333 cal
Flat Iron Steak 100g 137 cal
Beef Jerky 100g 410 cal
Keep in mind that 100 grams is approximately a 3 oz. serving - most of our client are allowed at least 4-5 oz. beef as their protein choice, so choosing your beef well can have a significant impact on your waistline. This is why at Nutrition by Tanya we recommend have beef no more than twice a week, and choosing lean cuts whenever possible.
Definitely have some beef, though! There are amazing benefits to eating beef, aside from it being delicious!! A 4 ounce serving of beef is a good source of niacin, vitamin B6, iron and riboflavin, which means it supplies 10 to 19 percent of the Daily Value for these nutrients per serving. All of these nutrients play a vital role in the body. Protein helps build bones, muscles, cartilage and skin, and can help you recover from a workout!
So enjoy your beef in moderation, and choose the right cuts!
Your truly,
Alice
