If the frigid temperatures from this past week are any warning of what is to come for the winter season ahead, we must brace for worse than last year. The storms from 2021 led to many home and vehicle owners being stranded. Streets quickly flooded, causing basements and motor vehicles to become overwhelmed by water elements. Chaverim of Queens was just one of several organizations that stood up in a big way. This past week, Chaverim of Queens co-founder and vice president Avigdor Cyperstein sat down with a handful of his members who were active in rescues last year to discuss safe and practical solutions if New York City were to fall victim to further storm damage. “I sat down with a dedicated group of young men that have dealt with storm destruction,” expressed Cyperstein. “Each of them is well equipped with the necessary experience and wherewithal to help our communities if heaven forbid, we are dealt another winter blow. They know what to expect.” The volunteer group at the strategy session included Dovid Bakst, director of external fundraising; Eliyahu Love, director of dispatching; and Moshe Teicher, director of social media. The meeting also included the presence of Menachem Jacobson, a member who went above and beyond the call of duty by wading through frosty waters during one torrential downpour.
