The Chazaq Organization, in conjunction with the office of the mayor and the office of the Queens Borough President, spent the morning of August 10th distributing roughly 10,000 masks to members of the Queens community in front of their Jewel Avenue headquarters in an outstanding giveaway event. To promote a green environment, the hundreds of participants were also treated to reusable bags sponsored by Census2020. Everyone was educated on the importance of filling out their household’s census forms to ensure no funding is lost.

The need for face masks or coverings should not be lost on anybody as the COVID-19 threat is still very real. To help the community stay safe here is some much-needed advice.  You must wear a face mask or face covering in public when social distancing, when staying at least 6 feet apart is not possible, unless a face covering is not medically tolerated. This includes on public transport, in stores and on crowded sidewalks. Children over 2 years of age should wear a face mask in public, too. Children under 2 years of age should NOT wear face coverings for safety reasons. Cloth face coverings should be made from fabric you cannot see through when held up to the light. They must be cleaned before reusing. Disposable paper face masks should be used for one outing outside the home. They cannot be properly cleaned. The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to continue social distancing, meaning staying at least 6 feet away from others, even when wearing a face covering.

When putting on a face covering, make sure to clean your hands with soap and water or if that is not available an alcohol-based hand sanitizer will suffice. Do these steps before putting on your face covering. Make sure the face covering covers both your nose and mouth. This is probably the most important statement here – make sure your nose and mouth are not exposed! DO NOT wear your mask hanging under your nose or mouth or around your neck. You will not get the protection you need. DO NOT wear the face covering on top of your head or take it off and on repeatedly. DO NOT allow a strap to hang down and DO NOT cross the straps. DO NOT wear your facemask around your neck and wearing your facemask around your arm is just silly. Once it is in place with the bands behind your ears, leave the covering in place until you are no longer in public.

When removing the face covering, make sure to clean your hands as mentioned earlier. Remove your mask only touching the straps and then discard the face covering if it is disposable. If you are reusing a cloth material, place it in a paper bag or plastic bag for usage

later. Then, wash your hands again. When cleaning a cloth face covering, always put it in the washer, preferably on the hot water setting. Dry your covering in a dryer at high heat. When it is clean and dry, place it in a clean paper or plastic bag for later use. If you live in a household with many people, you might want to label the bags with names, so the face coverings are not mixed up. Keep safe.
