On Sunday, April 14, the Eduard Nektalov Memorial Foundation held its 15th annual charity at the Bukharian Jewish Center’s Mirror Hall. This event, which is scheduled a few days before the onset of Pesach, assembles volunteers to prepare and distribute Pesach food packages to the community’s beneficiaries. The number of reported recipients for this year’s program amounted to approximately three hundred families.

This year’s event was presided over by the Foundation’s President Mr. Yosef Haimov, and members of its Board of Directors: Messrs. Leon Nektalov, Rafael Sofiev, Iosif Yunatanov; and Mses. Tavriz Aronova, Marina Nektalov, and Betiyanu Rubinova with her son Yakov.

Ms. Marina Nektalov made sure to bring her grandchildren to the event, so that they can take a lesson from her late husband, Mr. Eduard Nektalov. Ms. Nektalov was familiar with her husband’s preparation for the holiday, which included a list of beneficiaries in need of help for their Pesach Seder; he did his best to cover them all. Today, the Foundation provides fresh and kosher meat, chicken, matzah, mayonnaise, grape juice, fruit juices, and eggs in memory of Mr. Nektalov’s devotion toward the needy.

A number of young men and women volunteered the night before distribution to pack the goods. Joshua Yunatanov, Aaron Vilinsky, Hannah Haft, Mahlia Leventhal, Lili Leventhal and Jacob Izrailov put a real effort to help ensure every package is stocked full with each item. The Foundation also arranged delivery to the infirm; they were able to collect the package at their front door.

The Eduard Nektalov Memorial Foundation was created in 2004 to commemorate the work of Mr. Eduard Nektalov. He was a social activist, a major philanthropist and benefactor of the Bukharian community. Over the years and in accordance with his vision, the Foundation has made contributions to various Jewish causes including a 2004 Fire Truck donation to a city in Israel; $100,000 donation in support of IDF veterans wounded during the 2006 Lebanon war; and planting hundreds of trees in Israel. The Foundation has also sponsored the existence of a synagogue in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for a little over a decade, ensuring a daily minyan and lecture.

The Edward Nektalov Memorial Foundation continues to operate with the same vigor which moved Mr. Eduard Nektalov before his soul was returned its Creator.
